Berg Balance Test

Absolute reliability was calculated using an analysis of variance having a 95% confidence level, as recommended by Bland and Altman. All that is needed to total this test is really a step, measuring device such as a ruler, two chairs -- one with out armrests and one with armrests, a watch or stopwatch, along with a minimum of 15 feet of walking space. In 1989, the Berg Balance Scale was produced by Katherine Berg. It has been found to become an appropriate assessment of standing balance for these individuals as shown by its strong associations with numerous clinical walking evaluations Roughly 20 minutes (in relative nicely functioning older adults). The Berg Balance Scale comprises of a total fourteen functional tasks. The evaluation considers how much time the patient takes to total specific tests, along with the how well he is in a position to do it.

Balance is the ability to preserve the center of gravity over a base of support, usually in an upright position. With good balance, a patient has the capability to sit, stand, or walk safely, falling, or reaching for external items for support. Balance is complex and is really a coordinated response of the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems. The Berg Balance Test was developed in the early 1990s as a means of measuring balance in the elderly. It has been shown to be a consistent and reliable test.

Patients are asked to total fourteen tasks while an examiner rates the patient⤙s efficiency on each task. Elements of the test are representative of daily activities that require balance, like sitting, standing, leaning over, and stepping. Some tasks are rated according to the quality of the efficiency of the task, while others are evaluated by the time needed to complete the task.

Elderly population with impairment of balance, patients with acute stroke (Berg et al 1995, Usuda et al 1998). There may be other populations involved in other studies
Equipment required for testing is really a stopwatch or watch having a second hand, along with a ruler or other indicator of 2, 5, and 10 inches. Chairs used during testing should be a reasonable height. Either a step or a stool of average step height may be used for item # 12.

Tests for balance should be conducted in a safe and controlled area exactly where patients cannot be injured if they fall or become dizzy. The health care professional should evaluate the patient⤙s static and dynamic balance before leaving the patient unattended and provide close supervision during the test.

The Berg balance scales give results on the condition of a patient depending on the tests performed on a patient. The tool subjects a patient through fourteen different kinds of tests. These tests are not extra ordinary stuff but they involve the basic day-to-day activities that we perform on a daily basis to determine if the patient is in a fit condition to operate on his or her own. These activities include sitting unassisted, standing from sitting, sitting from a standing position, standing with eyes closed, transferring positions, and standing with feet together. Other activities are like standing on 1 foot, retrieving items from the floor, and turning around, stool stepping and reaching forward while standing. 1 has to be observed if he or she can perform these tasks unassisted to determine if they are nicely enough to be at home with their families or if they need medication or hospitalization.
